what can I say, what can I do?
what can I give back to you?
the things you gave, I can never match
but you want nothing in return
that’s your loving catch

so I’ll say it, can you hear?
I’m so glad
you put me here

where everyday is an unknown show
I can’t say which way it will go
and neither can you
but you know

that’s there’s little I can do
to guess it any better than you did
the day I walked out your door
and we both wondered
what it’s all for

but there’s no guessing
why I’m singing this one — hear:
I’m so glad
that you put me here

Still Your Man

Written in May 2011, a love song wrapped in the blues — or maybe it’s a blues wrapped in a love song.

For me, this one’s about resilience, reaffirmation, putting your feelings out there, and making bonds stronger through open eyes.  My obsession with major to minor chord drops continues here.  On this side of mellow, but best played loud … so crank it up.

Contact me if you ever want an mp3 for listening away from your —ahem— well-meaning computer speakers ; )

You and I, we’ve been together for so long
through weak and through strong,
and if there ever was a time
where I said that I didn’t want you
I was a fool, such a fool

And there were some
times — we knew they would come,
days when I would wonder
if I was your only one,
but there never was a time where you said
that you didn’t love me
you were cool, cool, cool

Open your eyes
see just where I stand
still you man,
standing here for so long
always true
sometimes strong,
doing anything that I can
to be your man

So won’t you take my hand, and let me be your man?
now that we’re halfway there
now’s the time to really care,
not throw away our education — in love,
me and you?
ah, we’ve done some learning girl

And so my darling, I have one thing to say
even when my mind is broken
and they want to throw me away,
there will never be a time where I’ll say
there will never be a time where I said
that I don’t want you,
that I don’t need you,
that I don’t love you

Take Off Your Flip-Flop

Just for fun I attempt to write the worst song ever.  Results?  An ode to the end of summer 2011, while I reluctantly take off my flip-flops.

You want it all to go, go, go …
but it must stop. stop. stop.
that thing you already know
it’s time to take off your flip-flop

It’s the ultimate bummer
the end of the summer,
soon you’re living on the North Pole
eskimo with a frozen soul

So take off your flip-flop,
time to take off your flip-flop

I Wrote Her a Song

Had a nice moment in the kitchen last week when I strummed and sang this one for Sue and Jules — resulting in the longest hug ever from Julia.  Payment received.

Written in May 2011, it’s a simple love song built on 3 chords: D, G and A — of course.  Kinda old school, I’ve really been appreciating very straightforward 60′s / 70′s songwriting lately — especially John Fogerty and Van Morrison.  So I didn’t want to fuss too much and complicate the lyric or chord structure.  I am particularly fond of the line “time goes by at the speed of a sweet baby girl”.  That’s my life right now.

This recording is a quick sketch with piano, voice and guitar. It’s the type of demo I record when a song is close to complete, listen to over a bit of time on the iPod, and then re-record with a modified verse, different arrangement, harmonies etc that I work out.  Click the little grey triangle to play, and please let me know what you think!

I wrote her a song
because I just couldn’t say
what I felt in my heart
and couldn’t hide it away,
she sat right next to me
as my fingers did play,
I wrote her a song that day

I played it again
before she knew it too well
and if she didn’t like it
you know I just couldn’t tell,
she sang with me, a harmony
as high as the trees where we lay
laughing, singing in the shade that day

We played it around
our own little world
from right in the backyard
to a sweet baby girl,
and every year I sang it
it made her golden hair curl,
time goes by at the speed of a sweet baby girl

I have this one dream
where she plays me my song
and as she’s singing
we all sing along,
have you heard her
singing just like a bird?
be sure to hear
the sweetest sound you’ve ever heard

I wrote her a song
even though I can say
what I feel in my heart
without my D, G and A,
she sits right next to me
as my fingers do play,
I wrote her a song today
I wrote her a song today

Deeper In Love

Ah, 17: so much melancholy, so many D chords, so many bluesy guitar solos — and the time to play them!

Deeper in Love was written in 1979 / 80.  But this is the first time I’ve recorded the song — roughly 30 years later.  Lots of lyrical clichés in here, but it’s been fun to remain true to the words of the teenage me, while making a recording reflecting my emotional and musical state of mind back then: blue.

Main musical influences on this song: the darker songs from the classic CSN and Déjà Vu albums, Traffic and Cat Stevens spinning on my turntable over, and over, and over again.

Now’s When (Vocal added)

I finally recorded a vocal and harmony to Now’s When this month. I’ve never been a strong singer and will often hear a different voice than my own on a song … that’s the case here, where I really hear a female voice on the lead.  Even though I mangle the vocal, it brings me a lot of joy to play and sing — especially when the JBJBs sing it together at the piano.  Written in the Spring of 2009 after watching 3 consecutive Disney movies with my 8-year old daughter, it’s about the beauty all around us — if we just take the time to look.

This song is supposed to be very simple, and strictly commercial. So for any brand managers and mad men reading: the little blue triangle below will lead you to pure gold.  Looking for a vehicle for cruising into the hearts of consumers everywhere?  You found it! I’m tellin’ ya: advertising GOLD ; )

There’s a time and place
that I’ve been searching for,
as plain and simple
as this open door

didn’t have to wait
shouldn’t hesitate,
gonna start right here
with you it’s true,
listen to me when I say

Now’s when I discover
Now’s when I uncover
Now’s when, Now’s when I see you

There’s a story
that I always thought would be,
but it’s playing out
right here in front of me

now my title’s here
first chapter’s clear,
gonna write my book
right here with you

listen to me when I say
(Chorus)

Don’t want to live a life
that I will never see,
gonna hold the things
right here in front of me

didn’t have to wait
shouldn’t hesitate,
gonna start right here
with you it’s true

listen to me when I say
(Chorus)

(intro & outro below, vocal unrecorded)
we’ve got to learn to live today
then we’ll see that
there’s nothing else — but everything
just as it is, and
open your eyes to see the world
singing with you now

Nothing Can Hold Me Back (updates)

Backwards guitars!  I’ve been working with the original recorded material for “Nothing Can Hold Me Back” to see what some digital editing enhancements might add — adding 1 extra guitar part before starting the edits.  So this is the same source material as the previous post — only tweaked in Pro Tools.  Having lots of fun turning the guitar parts backwards (huge Beatles fan) and adding some vocal mic and amp effects.  More updates on this one will follow.  See my last post (below) for lyrics.

Nothing Can Hold Me Back (initial sketch)

I’m taking a sidetrack from “Now’s When”, which I’m finding difficult to get a good vocal track on.  (Let’s just say that Winter 2009/10 will be remembered as the “winter of phlegm” for this—ahem—”vocalist”.)  As a diversion, I’ve started to record a 17-year-old song called “Nothing Can Hold Me Back”.  This song is darker, with the chorus turning the positive “Nothing can hold me back” upside-down with “from a fall”.  I always loved the way John Lennon would do that to a McCartney write.  That device was a big inspiration for this.

Dubbed as “Big Philly Rock Hit” by the boys in the Thangs (don’t worry, you’re not the only one who’s never heard of the them), this song was written around 1992 while we were begging for gigs in downtown clubs.  This recording was begun in late-January 2010.

Sonically, this is a good example of how I’ll quickly record and mix a demo for myself once a song is written, then listen off and on for a week or so to see what parts I want to change, mix differently, re-record etc.  Pardon the vocal done in one take — these days I steal the time I can to record.  Randy on Idol might call it “a little pitchy dog”.  And so it goes for this fermenting songwriter; an update with new vocals and harmony, a true guitar solo will come when more direction forms over a few listens.  Some of these tracks will be saved, some will be trashed and replaced.  But I thought I’d post.  I think it needs a better incorporated chorus riff.  I do like a dirty intro and ending like this anymore though … and had fun running the vocal through the little box amp.

It’s very interesting to record a song with words and chords finished almost 20 years ago.  There’s a deep knowing of the song — like an old friend trying on new clothes: it’s fun to try on different trousers and see what works … and what’s silly-looking.

A low, low quality mp3 here being shared here.  I’ll be happy to email you a 320kbs instead of this dreadful 128.

You’ve got nothing to worry about
with life so pretty and all,
the wild flowers you hold in your hand
while those bugs creep and crawl,
you say it’s just like me
to see the underside of it all

Get to know me and learn my real name
I’m Mr. Negativity,
perfect one way, I can’t keep it the same
it’s in the way that I see
when you say you feel the same
I say “I don’t feel different at all”

Nothing can hold me back — from a fall
Nothing can hold me back
I’m here to push us over that wall,
Nothing can hold me back — from a fall

Get something I want, I don’t want it no more
strange disease,
passes me by I kick and scream on the floor
it’s in the way that I see,
when the light’s shining on you
you’ll find me where the shadows fall

Now’s When (instrumental)

I am recording vocals for this one now.  But I thought I would share the music that I’ll lay those vocal tracks on.

Now’s When is meant to be a pure pop song or commercial vehicle.  Written in the Spring of 2009 after watching 3 consecutive Disney movies with my 8-year old daughter, it’s packed with good ol’ American feel-goodness with lyrics about the beauty that’s all around us — if we just take the time to look.

The vocal intro & outro verse goes like this (the melody being played by the funky little clav lick in the beginning).  Hoping to get the JBJBs to help out on this part:
“we’ve got to learn to live today,
then we’ll know that
there’s nothing else but everything
— just as it is and —
open your eyes to see the world
singing with you now”

** Attention brand managers: the little grey triangle below will lead you to pure gold.  Looking for a vehicle for cruising into the hearts of consumers everywhere?  Well, this is it in the works, check back soon for an update with the vocals added!  I’m tellin’ ya: pure advertising GOLD ; )

Boxes of Never

This song is a open letter to that evasive, but ubiquitous “something”.  That could be a relationship not yet found, or words unable to be spoken, or meaning & purpose, or some sense of a higher being.  Pick your poison, it’s open-ended.

On another level, it’s very much a song written to life itself from the faulted, clumsy side of a person, beneath which lies the stuff that’s in us all: potential.  The song is attempting to be a reflection of that faulted thing, with a hint of beauty in there somewhere hopefully.

It wrote itself pretty quickly . . . there was a moment of inspiration when I heard a few measures of a Rick Danko song and had to run to the piano, holding on to that amazing feeling he has, and out it came over the next hour or so.  I tweaked it over a few nights.  The Danko magic?  It eluded me of course.  However, the song does manage to capture that signature Buckley smell ; )

Started in August 2009 with the working title “Sun to Moon”.  Rough piano, vocal, bass, guitar and drums are recorded here.  Posting a very low quality mp3 to accommodate the 5 plus minutes song length and maximum upload size allowance from my site host.  But you’ll get the idea.  There’s a finder’s fee for my voice.  Got a voice or musical fingers to offer?  I’d love to work with you.  Check back for a follow-up arrangement & thanks for listening!

I’ve got things that I want to tell you
so many things that I can’t say,
I have written boxes of letters
and I’m going to mail them all
to you today

but why don’t you call me when you get them?
just in case you don’t know
what I’m trying to say,
’cause sometimes I can
go on and on and
not make sense — like this silly fool song,
but deep, deep down inside
there is a river — raging strong

where I will build a place for you and I to live,
it’s a place where there is everything
to give — and say,
where I will greet you
my friends will meet you
and tell me to find any way — to make you stay,
enough of these silly boxes of never

so I’m getting up today
deep, deep down inside there is a river — raging strong

Love Is The Only Love

The title says it all: Love is the only love.  This song is about the illusion of daily struggles in the midst of having just what I need.  Not that struggles aren’t real; but they aren’t nearly as real as the ultimate bottom line of love and life itself.

Written in the mid 1990′s or so.  Recording started in Summer 2009.  Pardon the drum track on this sketch — I am no drum programmer or drummer!  There is a repeating pattern in the bass that that runs e-d-b over a repeating Em /G /A /G  progression that I would like to bring out more fully as a main thematic element . . . as well as lay a better lead vocal.  So expect an update.  Most bassists seem to like this one because they can dig into that repeating lick.

There’s nothing I need
that I don’t have,
to live and breathe is something
for what more can I ask?

but every day I struggle to find
the things I think I need to rise above,
while all the time
love is the only love

To live today, some say
is the hardest thing they’ve ever done,
so hard to find your way
and keep the madness on the run

but when I see you standing there
after all this time
I still catch myself staring,
can’t see the hate
or the killing of love
or the people who fall
while others rise above

that’s not to say
that there’s nothing else I’m thinking of,
that’s just to say
love is the only love

Bridge:
they live in a world of fear
I look through you like a window
and hold on to what I know is true
I hold on to love
I hold on to love

Out Of My Mind

This one was written about 4 years ago.  A relationship song about moving on when there’s nothing to save anymore, and probably never was.  A bit of a alt-country thing happening on this one — probably listening to Steve Earle and Ryan Adams at the time.  I like the 2 opening lines.  Sometimes you just need to burn it all down.  Recording started July, 2009.

Just when I thought I couldn’t learn anymore
I found another bridge to burn,
spent a year or ten back in school
and learned that bad never takes a turn
so I’m moving on, done wasting time
you’re already out of my mind

There’s nothing here I can save anymore
I’m gonna to burn the whole thing to the ground,
and like a flower on a wildfire hill
I’ll be the color of a hopeful sound,
I’m the only one they’re going to find
you’re already out of my mind

out of my mind with a hole in my heart
falling out of the sky
gonna make a new start

So as you’re traveling down your asphalt dreams
I’ll be the dust in this lonely town,
See a road and don’t know where it goes?
That’s the one I went traveling down,
You’ll never know which of your dreams were mine
You’re already out of my mind

Rochelle

Rochelle was written in 2007ish and is definitely not well, a “happy” song.  Inspired by friends moving to Florida and how their stories DID NOT turn out.  Rochelle’s sad story just unfolded from there as a point to start her journey — but her story went the opposite direction, with one beautiful and giving moment as exception.  Look for a few obscure David Bowie references.

A work in progress.  Stylistically, a real departure for me and difficult to sing.  This recording is a start.  I like the small ensemble feel but may take it to a whole different place in the end.  The lyrics are finished.

Her name was Rochelle
and she was born next to a long straight highway,
her parents were on their way
running to the warm and sunny

She grew up in FL
running from the gators and the DEA,
another swamp getaway
for the nervous girl with seven fingers

and Rochelle she’s a pretty girl
but cruel in the eyes
so they lay her down and bill her
for another day

She met a boy named Joey
with a thing for David Bowie
in his Berlin days,
you sit back in a methamphetamine haze
and Heroes is the finest hour

and Rochelle she’s a pretty girl
but she’s cruel in the eyes
so they lay her down and bill her
for another day

She’s calling in sick and listening to ‘Trane — Sunday morning
smoke and music enter the brain — freedom’s calling

They had a girl named Zoe
who turned out to be nothing
like they thought she would be,
she fell far from the tree
this was Rochelle’s finest hour

Joe the Lion enters the bar — Sunday morning
a couple of drinks he’s nailed to the car — freedom’s calling

and Rochelle she’s a pretty girl
but cruel in the eyes
so they lay her down and bill her
for another day

freedom’s calling

Sitting by your window
I see the world
as you’ll never know it:
it’s a simple thing girl

goes that I love you
but I know how things stop and start
and I know
I’m not in there
though I was at the start
I’m not in your heart

The tremble on your lips
stopped a long time ago
it’s painful to talk about it
but it’s time I let you know I know

if I was a surgeon
and I cut with a scalpel
right through that part, well I know
I wouldn’t find me
not in your heart
I’m not in your heart
